Our Home

There have been plenty of requests this year from both family and friends to see some pictures inside of our apartment. Sorry to those of you who may have envisioned us living in a mud or brick hut. Our 2-bedroom apartment is not drastically different than an apartment a young couple would inhabit in a big city anywhere in the world. It is one of 7 apartments in an old building -- well older than 50 years, and maybe closer to 100 -- that lines a narrow but busy street in our Cairo suburb. We have grown nearly immune to the seemingly (and surprisingly) distant rumble of the metro line running directly behind the building every few minutes from 5am - midnight. So, before we're both back in the U.S. for summer vacation, here's a taste of our home life--
Every home needs an animal that greets you at the door.
The door opens to the Dining room, with an old small brick fireplace in the back left corner. You may recognize the art above the table from one of our previous postings...it was one of the presents I gave Kerry for Christmas. The art on the left is a painting on cloth from Uganda. Oh, and the entire apartment has about 12 ft. ceilings.
From this picture of the dining room (above), you can see the door to our bedroom.
...And another cat to greet you on the bed.
We love the flowering tree outside our front windows.
Just for fun...
Now entering the living room...

Pottery from Cyprus on the top. Lots of natural light because the room opens onto our front balcony (which also connects with our bedroom). Our very green couch, always in the lime-light. Above the TV is a framed Bedouin mask. The beautiful framed pictures on the wall were taken by Kerry during her time in Uganda.
This picture is taken from right inside the front door in the dining room, looking right. The door with the window is the bathroom (isn't that the most illogical door to have a window?!). Our collection of rod iron things are on the right: mirror, wine rack, and coat rack. Just to the right of the bathroom is the 2nd bedroom, which we forgot to take pictures of. But, you're not missing much, trust us. It's basically a collaboration of extra furniture that we did not want to go any place else, with sky blue walls.
Looking out of the extra bedroom, here is our linen closet covered with Bedouin style canvas. Our Ethiopian maid (who is very sweet) gave us the hanging on the left for Christmas.

Looking back across the dining room toward the front door. Pictures from Kerry's Ugandan Gorilla trekking on the wall.

Next to the front door is the entrance to a small hallway, with 1/2 bath at the end, and door to the kitchen on the left.
The tiles for our name we bought in a small Spanish town, and I found an antique hanging rack from the woodworker's shop across the street to glue them onto.
And then, turn left into our kitchen....our small, and very yellow kitchen. The larger picture was taken in Ronda, Spain, on our honeymoon. We went to one of those cheesy old dress-up photo shops. I'm a 'Bandito' and Kerry is a 'Flamenca' dancer. Ole!
The kitchen opens up onto our back balcony, which we've lined with bamboo fencing (a much better view than the metro tracks) and filled with leftover patio furniture, flowers, and the Weber BBQ!

The kids make it home for their daytime naps. This time of year we don't find them on chairs, but rather under them trying to escape the direct sun of summer.

Cato likes the Weber too. But when we grill he lets us know he'd rather have what we pull off it.
So there's the 10 cent tour before we're both off for vacation. Hope you enjoyed it! If it wasn't good enough...or even if it was....come visit us!!!

My Hips Don't Lie

If you have heard of the game "two truths and a lie" then perhaps you also encounter situations every now and again when you suddenly realize how great a "truth" that would be for the game. That happened to us a couple months ago, when the last week of March Kerry and I unexpectedly ended up as part of a crowd of 25,000 watching Shakira perform at a relatively new concert venue in front of the Giza Pyramids!

The day before the concert we were offered four free tickets by a friend (Thanks, buddy!!), and despite the concert being held on a Wednesday, a school/work night, we decided to go anyway. Why not, we're only young once, right?!! We went with Craig and Erin, our recently married friends who teach with Kerry and are also in our church cell group. They are leaving Cairo to go teach in Warsaw, Poland next year. We have appreciated their friendship so much, and will miss them! We love you guys!

Here's a picture of us with them at the engagement party Kerry threw for them, spring 2006

The opportunity to go to such a unique yet intoxicating event was a thrill. And as it turned out, the evening went from being a somewhat predictable and typical Cairo traffic fiasco to being an all out logistical nightmare for the average spectator. We're somewhat exhausted right now on cultural differences, so will spare you the passionate telling of the whole frustrating experience (Kerry leaves in less than 3 days, and Marcus in 12!), but ask about it when you hopefully all talk to us this summer!

Here are shots of Kerry and Erin at the concert, and us walking down the endless road (more than 10km!) all the way around the pyramids to the gates! We're smiling in the picture because it was taken after walking only about 1km. By the end, there were blisters in place of smiles!

A few shots from the concert. Though not great quality, they give you a general idea:

"Whenever, Wherever"....Whatever

Wow, that is a lot of pink.

If you want to get a better taste of what the actual concert experience was like, or see how they turn a desert platform into an all out concert venue, check out some of the youtube video links:
